Film Friday: Platform 9 3/4 at London Kings Cross
Each Friday, I’ll be briefly profiling a specific location somewhere in the world that has been featured in a movie or TV show.
This week, the site is Platform 9 3/4 in London .
Okay, okay. So I’m kind of fudging this one a bit. All of my previous Film Friday posts have showcased places that have actually appeared in films. This week is a bit different — and yet too cool not to share!
I spent my summer traveling around Europe, and saw lots of places that have been used as backdrops for lots of movies. But once I got to the UK, I really started to geek out.
I’ve been a “Harry Potter” fan since the 7th grade (that’s roughly half my life now!), and so I knew I couldn’t possibly go to London without making a trip to Kings Cross. As any HP fan knows, it’s from this train station in central London that Harry and all his magically-inclined peers catch the scarlet Hogwarts Express from Platform 9 3/4.

There is, of course, no actual Platform 9 3/4. While some of the Kings Cross scenes WERE filmed at the actual train station, no secret platform exists between platforms 9 and 10.
But the people of London aren’t quite as serious as they’d like you to believe.
Because, if you are willing to go look for it, you CAN find Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross.
The location of this “platform” takes after some of the staircases at Hogwarts — it moves around the station. I’ve heard some people say they found it between platforms 3 and 4. Others have found it near Platform 6.
When I was there (during the Olympics ), Platform 9 3/4 was not near any of the actual platforms at all. Instead, it was near the departures board — easy for Potter fans to find.
And find it I did. And it was magical.
(If you can’t find it, though, just ask someone who works at the station. Unsurprisingly, it’s not a weird question for them to hear!)
This was only the beginПing of my Harry Potter-themed adventures in London. Stay tuned for many more!
