Pennsylvania State College Student Dies in Fall from Apartment Balcony.
Police in State College, Pennsylvania have reported that a 20 year-old Penn State student has died this past Saturday, November 16, 2013, after falling from the ninth floor of an apartment complex .
According to State College Police, 20 year-old Conor F. MacMannis, of Stafford, Virginia, was at his apartment in the Penn Tower apartment complex on East Beaver Avenue. The police believe that a party may have been ongoing in the apartment, as it was 3:40 a.m. and several people were inside the apartment. MacMannis ventured out to the apartment’s balcony and slipped over the railing, landing on the sidewalk in front of the building. MacMannis was pronounced dead at the scene of the trip and fall accident.
According to the police spokesperson, if there had been a party going on at the apartment, it was not loud or rowdy. The police believe that alcohol and drugs may have played a role in the tragic slip and fall accident.
There had been numerous prior instances of residents throwing objects and even themselves from the balconies at the complex, but proposals to putting safety netting above certain floors have been rejected.
